Learn about a Family Heirloom
GO BACK to the main Expedition Night page.
Remember: Any time you need help or resources, go to the FamilySearch center.
As you go about your adventures, remember to upload a few photos to the slideshow - we'll return to the church at 7:30 for ice cream sandwiches and to watch that slideshow!
Choose an heirloom
Choose something that your great-great-grandchildren would be interested in. The best guide? What would you be interested to know about your great-great-grandparents?
Take a photo of the heirloom
Make sure the lighting is good. Indirect light works best.
You'll upload the photo of the heirloom with the story about it.
Get the parts of the story
I recommend you write the story together. Have the kids, or your friends, ask about the heirloom. You'll find that they'll highlight things you might not have thought to include.
If it's an heirloom that you don't know much about, note questions that you can ask other members of your family (we often wondered, for example, why my great-grandmother was so taken with the ugly china she had - until we learned that my uncle sent it to her from his mission).
Write the story
The key thing here is that, in FamilySearch, you want to upload a "story." A story can include text and images.
How to write the story in FamilySearch (note that this is when you upload the image as well).
Tag the story to other people involved
"Tagging" the story means to tie it to the FamilySearch profiles for the people it mentions. Doing this makes it easy to find from the profile pages of people mentioned in the story.
